A Big Comparison of Electronic Cat Litter Boxes: Litter Robot vs. PetKit Pure X and Pure Max 1
Our real-life experience with eight Bengals (plus a few tiny terrorists)
Life in our cattery, Whinecat.cz, is always in full swing – we have eight adult Bengal cats and regularly welcome new kittens who test our sense of order and patience. Since we care deeply about cleanliness, comfort, and feline health (and also prefer our house not to smell like a shelter), we decided to invest in automatic litter boxes.
We use fine, clumping Beneko Blue litter, unscented – ideal for sensitive paws and human noses.

We tested the three most frequently mentioned smart litter boxes:
Litter Robot (non-Connect version)
PetKit Pure X
PetKit Pure Max 1
So how did they hold up in real feline operation? Take a look at our honest comparison, which considers not only the cats’ satisfaction but also the human owner's sanity.
🟡 Litter Robot
The Rolls-Royce of cat toilets – just without a mobile app
✅ Pros:
The cats love it – most use it naturally without needing to be taught
Works excellently with fine bentonite litter
Thorough cleaning with no leftovers
Durable, reliable construction
❌ Cons:
It’s huge – big, heavy, and not exactly elegant
No mobile app (at least in our case – we have the older model)
Slightly noisy for more sensitive ears
👤 Owner’s take:
If the cats could vote, the Litter Robot would win the election. They come, do their business, and walk away – this beast handles it all. We love it for its reliability, but we’ll admit – the design isn’t exactly minimalist-friendly.
🔵 PetKit Pure X
A stylish litter box with wellness features – for cats and their humans
✅ Pros:
Gorgeous design – fits right into a modern apartment
Some cats even use it… as a bed
Has a mobile app that tracks cat weight and habits
Quiet and discreet
❌ Cons:
Smaller entry, some cats aren’t fans
With heavy use (like 8 cats), it needs more frequent maintenance
Less space inside compared to the Robot or Pure Max
👤 Owner’s take:
PetKit Pure X is a looker. Visitors sometimes compliment it more than our kitchen. It’s great for a designer interior, and ideal for one or two cats. Easy to clean, and the weight-tracking app is a huge plus – especially for cats that like to “secretly slim down” or mysteriously gain weight from some unknown galactic source.
🔴 PetKit Pure Max 1
Owner's favorite – if you're going smart, go all the way
✅ Pros:
Super easy to clean – pure luxury for the owner
App tracks weight, visit frequency, and litter levels
Spacious inside – comfortable even for larger cats
Option for automatic litter refill
Discreet yet effective odor filtration system
❌ Cons:
Bigger and more robust build
Slightly louder than the Pure X
Some cats take a bit longer to get used to it
👤 Owner’s take:
If the Litter Robot is the king of litter boxes, the PetKit Pure Max 1 is the emperor with a secretary. It monitors, weighs, cleans, and reports. For owners, it’s the most convenient option – especially with multiple cats. The app clearly shows everything from cat weights to when the bin needs to be emptied. Maintenance? Fast, clean, and almost hands-free.
✨ Verdict from Experience: What do the cats think – and what about us?
| Model | Cat Preference | Ease of Cleaning | Tracking | Features |
| Litter Robot | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐ | ❌ |
| PetKit Pure X | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ | ✅ |
| PetKit Pure Max 1 | ⭐⭐–⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ✅✅✅ |
🐾 Summary:
Cats love the Litter Robot the most – they’re familiar with it and use it instinctively.
PetKit Pure X is stylish, smart, and quiet – perfect for well-designed spaces.
PetKit Pure Max 1 is for those who want maximum control with minimal fuss – in our opinion, the best in terms of cleaning and health monitoring.
💬 Final Tip:
All of these devices clean thoroughly – the difference lies mostly in owner comfort and extra features. If monitoring cat weight (e.g., for health changes) matters to you, PetKit is the clear choice.
No matter which model you choose, your feline roommates deserve a clean bathroom – and you deserve some peace and quiet.
